The computer hard drive is a non-volatile data storage media, which is made up of several electronic and mechanical components such as disk controllers, read/write heads, disk platters, spindle motor, circuit board, and cables. The hard drive stores a huge amount of data including operating system, applications, and user data. It comes in various storage capacities which is measured in GB (Gigabyte) or TB (Terabyte).
A computer hard drive, which is attached externally to your system through an interface, like USB (Universal Serial Bus), is known as 'External hard drive.' Direct cabling to power outlet provides power supply to hard drive. The major hard drive internals are as given below:
- Platters- The hard drive platters are circular metal disks, which are permanently mounted or fixed in the hard drive and are not removable. Disk platters are mounted on the fixed spindle motor to create more storage space in small area. The digitally encoded information is stored on rapidly rotating magnetic platters. The central part of platter is made of aluminum or glass substrate and, covered with thin Cobalt Alloy or Ferric Oxide layer. The thin coating is placed on both sides of the substrate fabric by special mechanized technology.
- Media Layer- It is a substrate or material, which shapes the base on which the actual recording of data is done. It is a thin coating of the magnetic material, which is applied to the surface of the hard drive platters.
- Read/Write Heads- These are hard drive components, which read data from the hard drive platters and also write data on it. They work as an interface between electronic components of hard drive and magnetic media. Heads convert data (stored in the form of bits) to magnetic pluses when writing to drive and reverse the procedure while reading data from the drive. These heads are the most fragile and sensitive components of modern hard drives.
- Spindle Motor- The spindle motor plays a significant role in reading and writing the hard drive by spinning the platters at very high speed. It gives stable, reliable, and consistent power for several hours of uninterrupted use.
- Circuit Board- This is also known as PCB (Printed Circuit Board) or logic board. The hard drive has an intelligent logic board with hard drive unit. The circuit board forms the base of the hard drive casing, and is visible on the outer side. Hard drive read/write heads are interlinked with circuit board via flexible ribbon cable.
Under some circumstances, like, power outages, natural disasters, or accidental drop down, these components may get damaged and you may come across hard drive failure. In such situations, hard drive recovery service is required to retrieve lost data from affected drive. It is a personalized help, delivered by recovery professionals. Stellar Data Recovery Inc. experts recover hard drive data in Class 100 Clean Rooms.
However, if your hard drive is working properly, and you still can not access data, hard drive recovery software come to the rescue. Stellar provides hard drive recovery tools for Windows, Mac OS X, UNIX, Linux, and Novell operating systems.
